Ocean Triple R: Remote Recovery Rescue Emergency Care

Courtesy of Nuala Moore, Dingle, Co Kerry, Ireland.

Nuala Moore explains the second Ocean Triple R (Remote Recovery Rescue) Emergency Care Summit that she developed with Dr. Patrick Buck, "ICE Immersion Cold Emergencies Level 1 program is tailored for the swimming community. As the numbers of swimmers increase both in distance and low temperatures, so do do the need to manage the swims on a higher level.

Dr. Buck and I combined the standards and procedures of best practice in cold water emergencies and how that information could be best applied to all the challenges that Moore has faced, seen and experienced both as a swimmer and as a team member both in ice swimming and channel swimming.

It is all about education and prevention - we have the information, the outcomes of cold water swimming is an expected one and it would be wonderful to develop an ethos that taking on remote or ice swims would come with training for all areas including teams.

One area I focus on is casualties or unconscious swimmers' recovery and going through different skills that we can train for regarding swimmer removal and in-water rescue breaths as well as safety planning, team training, first aid and remote management.

It's as much about prevention, as it is about management of outcomes
."

Level 2 and Level 3 programs are scheduled to be unveiled in the coming months.

The course will be accredited to Mountain Medicine UK and Rescue Emergency Care Ireland and Europe.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
