Daring In Dingle: Nuala Moore

Courtesy of Red Bull, Dingle, Ireland.

Red Bull recently published a list of seven women from Ireland who go beyond the normal and extraordinary in the toughest environments on Earth.

In addition to adventurers Nikki Bradley and Dr. Clare O’Leary, runners Lillian Deegan and Sinead Kane, surfer Easkey Britton, and hiker Olive McGloin, open water swimmer Nuala Moore was selected to be among the toughest of the tough.

Red Bull described Moore as hard-core. "In 2006, she was one of a team of six swimmers to take on the 1,300km of Irish coastline and in 2008 she completed a double crossing of the English Channel. However, it’s her more recent achievements that have really proved her mettle.

Pioneering ice swimming in Ireland, Nuala is not afraid of a bit of freezing cold water, in fact she embraces it. In 2013, the Dingle native swam the Bering Strait from Russia to the United States in a relay and later that year became one of only four women to complete a 1 km swim at 0°C in Murmansk, north of the Arctic Circle. Since then she has also won the International Ice Swimming Association’s 1000m Championship at 1ºC in the Yenesei River in Krasnoyarsk, Russia and came second in the 200m at 0ºC water in the World Winter Swimming champs in Tyumen, Siberia

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
