Stephen Junk Completes A Straits Of Magellan Crossing

Courtesy of Cristian Vergara, PatagoniaSwim.com, Chile.

Stephen Junk of Australia successfully crossed the Strait of Magellan in 1 hour 3 minutes 44 seconds in a tandem swim with Francisco Aguirre of Chile.

Cristian Vergara of PatagoniaSwim reported, "The swim started on April 10th at 8:46 am from Punta Delgada swimming south to Tierra del Fuego in Chile. The weather that morning was partly cloudy skies with winds at about 14 knots. Each swimmer was escorted by a Zodiac to guide them and act in case of an emergency.

The swim was organized by PatagoniaSwim.com with the support of the Chilean Armada and medical support from the community of San Gregorio
."

Junk said, "I swam across the from mainland Chile to Tierra del Fuego. It was stunning weather, but very cold water. I had some sea life around me, being a penguin and a sea lion and had great support from Cristian and Julieta Núñez of PatagoniaSwim and also some very special help from the Chilean navy who provided physical support and support afterwards in bringing my body back to normal temperature. I am now feeling confident of swimming the North Channel in August.

We had some wonderful training beforehand on the beach at Punta Arenas
."

Junk became the first Australian and oldest person to cross the Straits of Magellan.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
