How Patrick McKnight Spent 34 Days In Summer

Courtesy of Brendan Cooperkawa showing Professor Patrick McKnight swimming past Roosevelt Island and toward Mill Rock to finish the 2016 20 Bridges Swim..

The video above only hints at the trials that Professor Patrick McKnight put him through between July 12th and August 15th this summer.

The 50-year-old Associate Professor at George Mason University has myriad eclectic interests including skiing, open water swimming, sailing, research and data analysis, reading, programming, running, mountaineering, and cooking.

After attempting to climb Mount Everest twice, in April 2014 and May 2015, and being stopped by avalanches and earthquakes, he turned his focus on breaking the vaulted Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming record of Rendy Lynn Opdycke. Opdycke has set the fastest turnaround time to complete the Triple Crown in a furious 35-day period in 2008.

But the adventurous professor made plans to break that record by a day.

He set off by completing a crossing of the Catalina Channel on July 12th in 11 hours 4 minutes. Then he followed that up with a July 21st crossing of the English Channel in 12 hours 54 minutes. He had a little bit of time to return home and recover for his August 15th circumnavigation swim around Manhattan Island on August 15th in 7 hours 31 minutes.

The video shows the ending part of that 34-day journey.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
