2016 Vidösternsimmet Finishers

Vidösternsimmet is a three-race event with a 0.5 km, 6 km and signature 21 km marathon swim across in Lake Vidöstern in Småland, Sweden.

As the race organizers state, "The Lake Vidöstern is a very tough lake to master, swimming. The wind often blows with a strength of 4-7 m/s and fog is quite common."

The 21 km marathon swim is Sweden's longest open water swimming competition where the course is divided into five legs between 2.8 km and 5.5 km in distance. The legs are as follows: 3.7 km Osudden-Funtabo, 3.9 km Funtabo-Tånnö, 5.5 km Tånnö-E4:ans Camping, 3.4 km E4:an Camping-Ekens Camping, and 5.0 km Ekens Camping-Sundet.

Swimmers can stop for hydration and refueling. Wetsuits are optional with tow floats used.

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.
