Jordan Wilimovsky Aiming To Double Up At The Olympics

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California

While all kinds of Olympians and world championship medalists were fighting it out at the 2016 USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships a few weeks ago, there was one glaring no-show: defending 10 km national and world champion Jordan Wilimovsky of Malibu, California.

With the goal of making both the pool and open water Olympic teams for his native America, Wilimovsky has been focused on swimming fast in the pool and qualifying for his second event at the Rio Olympics [after the 10 km marathon swim].

While the rest of the open water swimming world will be trying to qualify for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in Portugal in June, Olympic 10K pre-race gold medal favorite Wilimovsky is focused on qualifying for the 1500m freestyle at the USA Swimming Olympic Trials, also held in June.

He proved himself worthy of the dual pool + open water goal (aka pulling a Mellouli) when he swam a very swift 1500m freestyle at the Arena Pro Swim in Mesa, Arizona. Wilimovsky swam a lifetime best of 14:53.12, the world’s fifth fastest time this year.

Michael McBroom finished second in 15:11.62 while 3-time Olympic medalist Ous Mellouli finished third in 15:16.82. Taylor Abbott (15:28.60) finished sixth who just came back from becoming the fastest 18U swimmer at the USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
