Fairy Tale Rings True In The Open Water

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

When one person can tie so many luminaries and organizations across the globe together, they must be doing something right and innovative.

That is what Dr. Stathis Avramidis has done with his fairy tale book called A Chance for Children. The book is printed in Greek and English with the financial support of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation and other organizations from 20 countries:

• Ministry of Education, Research and Religion (Greece)
• Secretary General of Public Health - Ministry of Health (Greece)
• Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation (Monaco)
• A Chance for Children Foundation (USA)
• International Swimming Hall of Fame (USA)
• International Federation of Swimming Teachers' Association (UK)
• International Awards Giuseppe Sciacca (Italy)
• Giuseppe Sciacca Foundation (Italy)
• International Water Safety Day (USA)
• Brazilian Lifesaving Society (Brazil)
• Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Greece)
• Hellenic Federation of Underwater Activity (Greece)
• Pan-Hellenic Union of Qualified Physical Educators (Greece)
• Union of Greek Athletes with Extraordinary Achievements (Greece)
• Pan-Hellenic Union of Medical Doctors (Greece)
• National School of Public Health (Greece)
• Safe Water Sports (Greece)
• Hellenic Red Cross (Greece)

A Chance for Children (ACFC) is the name of the new children's book and water safety program, created by Dr Avramidis and inspired by the true events from the life of Greg Bonann and Tai Collins, the creator and screenwriter of the popular American TV program Baywatch.

In Greece, the fairy tale book is part of the Hellenic National Water Safety Program as a free e-learning module with an aim to reach 500,000 primary school children in Greece and millions of others worldwide.

The book contains educational games and theatrical play to engage the children in creative activities in schools, summer camps and water safety organizations.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
