Wetsuits To Be Adjudicated By FINA
FINA approved the following swimwear, goggles and swim caps for 2016. The official list is posted here.
The swimwear list from 86 manufacturers includes 1,943 suits. In a sign of growth of the sport of swimming, both in terms of participants and competitions, a total of 300 approved swimsuits were added this year.
There are a total of 1,016 female suits (163 added), 692 male suits (107 added), 92 swim caps (16 added), and 143 goggles (16 added).
Post-Olympics, FINA will mandate and allow wetsuits for open water swimming competitions held in water 20ºC (68ºF) and lower) so it is likely that additional open water swimsuits (inclusive of wetsuits) will be added to the list later this year.
We have numerous questions on this issue:
* Will neoprene swim caps will be approved, allowed or mandated?
* What level of compression and how many compression panels will be allowed in FINA-legal wetsuits?
* What minimum and maximum thickness of wetsuit material will be allowed?
* What level of hydrophobicity will be allowed in the wetsuits? * What level of buoyancy will be allowed in the wetsuits?
* Will air panels or pockets be allowed in the wetsuits?
* Can tech suits be worn in place of wetsuits?
We know there are specific types of neoprene and other types of synthetic fibers that are under development - some incredibly buoyant. It will be interesting how far FINA allows the wetsuit manufacturers to take the sport so athletes do not feel cold and can swim in buoyant attire.

The Other Shore
The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.
2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac
An Almanac for Open Water SwimmingAn almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.
This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.
But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.
In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
