How An Average Joe Gets On Television

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

"If I can achieve the impossible in the water, I can achieve great things in all aspects of my life," says Ryan Stramrood, a self-admitted Average Joe.

But there is simply nothing average about this South African Joe. His lifestyle is no average; his mindset is not ordinary. He is quite simply extraordinary.

"You are capable of certain stuff physically...until your mind tells you that you are capable of more. Swimming is solitary: you are facing down, you see stuff there, it keeps you alive, describes the late-blooming ice swimmer from Cape Town."

He has recently been very much alive - during an unprecedented swim in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Iceland where he was filmed swimming for a television program on extremists. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide, but it is 250 meters deep which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
