Go Cold, Go Long, Go Often in The Northeast Kingdom

Kingdom Games and the Northeast Kingdom Open Water Swimming Association announced its 2016 schedule in northern Vermont and the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Online registration is open at www.kingdomgames.co with one exception, the USMS National 10 Mile Championship registration, which will open later.

March 5th - 6th – Memphremagog Winter Swimming Championships – 25m, 50m, 100m, 200m swims in a 2-lane 25m pool, cut in the ice of Lake Memphremagog in Newport, Vermont

June 18th and 25th: Son of a Swim – 2-mile, 4-mile, 6-mile swims in Lake Memphremagog that can be used as a qualifier for Kingdom Swim. Maximum of 10 swimmers in each race.

July 30th – Eighth Annual Kingdom Swim – 15-mile Border Buster and 10-mile, 6-mile, 3-mile, 1-mile swims plus ¼-mile and 100-yard swims for youth in Lake Memphremagog. Kingdom Swim includes the U.S. Masters Swimming National 10 Mile Championships and the World 10 Mile Open Water Championship sanctioned by the World Open Water Swimming Association.

August 5th – Sixth Annual Seymour Swim – 3.5-mile and 1.75-mile swim as part of Kingdom Triathlon.

August 13th - 21st – Swim the Kingdom Week (9 days, 8 lakes, 45 miles, swim one event or all eight including 4 marathon swims with the option of shorter swims on each day or the option of doubling up on any day or all 8 ("Frying a Swim")

August 13th – Crystal Swim is a 5-mile swim to the cliffs, hang a right, swim to Moose Rock, cross the lake to the railroad tracks, head north back to Crystal State Beach in a spring-fed marvel

August 14th – 4-mile Island Pond Swim from the Public Dock, around the island, on to Brighton State Beach, run the sand and swim back

August 15th – Echo Lake Swim is marathon swim #1 around the perimeter once (6 km) or twice (12 km) of Echo Lake, the most pristine lake of the week

August 16th – Lake Seymour is marathon swim #2 at 6.2 miles from state beach on Route 111, swim to Wolf’s Point, to the dam across the lake, back to Dave Anderson’s Boat House by One Mile Road and back

August 17th – Lake Massawippi is marathon swim #3 at 9 miles from Ayers Cliff, Quebec and North Hatley or swim to Blueberry Point and return; passport required

August 18th – Lake Memphremagog is marathon swim #4 at 6.2 miles from The Clubhous around Bell and Black Islands, to The Slash (the border) at Province Island, east for a mile right along the international border to Eagle Point, past Cove Island on the way back to The Clubhous

August 20th – Sixth Annual Willoughby Swim, 5 miles across one of the most majestic and pristine, glacially carved lakes in the Americas

August 21st – Caspian Swim – 3 miles to Bathtub Rock and back or 1.5 miles to The Rock

August 27th – Echo Lake Road Race & Swim, a 1- and 3-mile swim late in the afternoon

September 10th – In Search of Memphre, a 25-mile, cold water expeditionary swim across the length of Lake Memphremagog between Newport, Vermont, U.S.A. and Magog, Quebec, Canada

October 8th – Georgeville or Bust, a 15-mile, international border-crossing between Newport, Vermont, U.S.A. and Georgeville, Quebec, Canada. Water temps guaranteed to be below 60ºF (15.5ºC) or your money back

October 30th – Vampire Swim in Newport, Vermont with Warm Blood, Cold Water – Swim the Chillies: a 25m - 100m cold water swim as part of an international blood drive by open water swimmers

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
