“Race for the Conch” Eco-SeaSwim Blossoms, Booms

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

"We had another great race in Turks & Caicos this year with far more people," reports Ben Stubenberg at the Race For The Conch Eco-SeaSwim. "The race seems it has really caught on."

"Six years ago in 2010, the first Turks & Caicos “Race for the Conch” Eco-SeaSwim could barely muster 50 swimmers. This year on July 4th, the international swim race in the clear, turquoise waters of Grace Bay, Providenciales saw 176 swimmers participate in 3 events of 2.4 miles, 1 mile, and 1/2 mile in distance.

On hand swimming non-competitively were 1984 Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines and world-class marathon swimmer Yuko Matsuzaki

Race conditions were perfect with welcomed calm seas and typically bright sunshine.

But the race was just a bit too popular. Stubenberg and co-director Chloe Zimmermann were a little embarrassed to have run out of conch medals for everyone who participated from across the Caribbean to the Americas. "But we will mail a medal to everyone who did not get one. The top three male and female finishers in each event received conch trophies carved a local artist."

American Gary Sangmeister from Pennsylvania took first place in the 2.4-mile in 1:01:19 with Cathy Gainor from Maryland winning the women’s division in 1:05:01. Fifteen-year-old Nadja Martinovic from New York won the ½-mile in 14:12 with Matthew Cronan from Minnesota winning the men's side in 15:09. In the men's 1-mile, Eric Stull from Pennsylvania upset 3-time defending champion and local swim star Dan Redmond in 24:16 to 24:24 while Melanie Mahaney from Pennsylvania won the women’s 1-mile in 26:54.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
