2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim Qualification Procedures

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

With 100 days until the first Olympic 10K Marathon Swim qualifier in Kazan, Russia, top-level marathon swimmers are really focused on their final preparations.

The qualification procedures for the 2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim will be the same* as it was in 2008 and 2012 where the selection process has not been without controversy.

In 2008, Daniel Katzir qualified for the Olympics, but the Israel Swimming Federation did not approve his entry. The same thing was decided in 2012 by the New Zealand Swimming Federation when Kane Radford qualified, but was not approved by his national federation.

That decision in 2012 led to FINA to decide that Guam's Benjamin Schulte selected over Ireland's Chris Bryan although Bryan placed higher in the Olympic qualifier.

* The first 10 spots in the Olympic final are reserved for the first 10 finishers at the first Olympic qualifier. The next 14 spots are reserved for the first 14 finishers at the second Olympic qualifier. The final spot is reserved for a representative of the host country (i.e., China in 2008, Great Britain in 2012 and Brazil in 2016).

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
