Kanuga Started Smiling, Finished Smiling

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

Kerri Kanuga, a Canadian living in the Cayman Islands, finished the longest swim of her life: the 12.5-mile FKCC Swim Around Key West.

The southernmost swim in the continental U.S. is conducted under extremely warm conditions, but Kanuga kept her smile the entire 5 hour 45 minute circumnavigation.

"At one point I caught a current whilst chasing a dingy full of Navy SEALs, so I reached speeds of 3.5 mph at one point. I was pleased with my time."

Kanuga completed the FKCC Swim Around Key West in honor of Hannah Meeson who has been bravely battling medulloblastoma. "Hannah is a beautiful, brave little girl who simply was given a bad hand. I know that if I experience discomfort when I train I can simply stop, These kids are not given that luxury and it breaks my heart that they have to go through this. Awareness is a huge part of the problem, if people do not know they cannot do anything about it.”

Hannah has endured 13 rounds of chemotherapy over a 22-month period. It was for her and others like her that helped push Kanuga.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
