Gergely Gyurta Goes Gangbusters In Front Of The Cameras

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

The great traditional swimming power of Hungary is seeing some competition from open water swimming upstart Poland. Based on the races in 2014 to date, the shifting towards the next generation of Olympic 10 km marathon swimmers is well underway.

But in front of a live television audience, veteran Gergely Gyurta of Hungary had plenty of motivation to keep the status quo. Gyurta took off with plenty to go in the race and never looked back in winning the most recent LEN Cup in an 8-loop course on Lake Balaton. But Mateusz Sawrymowicz of Poland tried to swim him down at the end as he is still learning how to swim a 10 km race.

While the Polish men are trying to establish themselves among the global elite, 2012 Olympian Natalie Charlos of Poland is already there.

At the second stage of the LEN European Open Water Swimming Cup in Lake Balaton, there were plenty of eyes to see the transformation. The 10 km marathon swim that included several Olympians and professional marathon swimmers was televised live as part of a mass participation open water swim.

While Gyurta won comfortably with a 15-second gap over Sawrymowicz, the women were characteristically close from start to finish.

Charlos and two Hungarian teammates Eva Risztov and Anna Olasz finished 1-2-3 as it came down to the end.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
