Lewis Pugh At The Woodstock Of The Mind

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

President Clinton once described the Hay Festival in Wales as 'the Woodstock of the Mind.'

With speakers such as Bear Grylls, Cherie Blair, Hugh Masekela, Dame Judy Dench, Sol Cambell, and Stephen Fry, open water swimmer Lewis Pugh will be among many well-spoken and well-respected peers.

Pugh will be launching his book 21 Yaks and a Speedo at the Hay Festival held between May 22nd and June 1st. The Hay Festival, Europe’s leading book festival, always offers a very diverse field of speakers and this year the group is especially fascinating with celebrated poets, scientists, lyricists, filmmakers, musicians, comedians, humanitarians, novelists, environmentalists...and one open water swimmer who has pushed the envelope in the Arctic Ocean, the North Pole, Mount Everest, the Maldives, and many other locations around the world.

Like other speakers at the Hay Festival, Pugh's 21 Yaks and a Speedo has the power to transform perspectives and motivations.

Pugh will speak on Wednesday, May 28th at The Oxfam Moot at 8:30 pm. His presentation, chaired by Paul Belzard, is described by the Hay Festival as follows:

"What does it feel like to stand on the edge of the sea ice at the North Pole in nothing more than a Speedo swimming costume? What kind of man dives into that freezing ocean and swims a full kilometre? And why? The intrepid environmentalist, endurance swimmer and inspirational UN Patron of the Oceans has swum as far north and as far south as a body can get, as well as on the earth's highest mountain. He's learned a few things about the extremes of human nature, and our fragile blue planet, along the way."

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
