Crippen Cup Competition

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

Miromar Lakes in Estero, Florida is one of the epicenters of competitive open water swimming in America. From national championships to world championship qualification races, the calm waters of Miromar Lakes has been the site of victories from many of the American open water swimming champions, from Chip Peterson to Ashley Twitchell, since 2008.

For the 13th year, Lee County is partnering with USA Swimming and the Gulf Coast Swim Team to host the annual Open Water Swimming Festival on April 12-13th at Miromar Lakes in Estero, Florida. "Miromar Lakes was the venue used to select the athletes who competed in the qualifications for the 2008 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim and will again play host to this world-class event,” said Jeff Mielke, executive director, Lee County Sports Development. “Our office believes this event will assist Southwest Florida in attracting future international competitions that will have a positive economic impact on our area.”

A new addition to this year’s multi-race Open Water Swimming Festival is the 10 km Crippen Cup Open Water Marathon on April 12th with a US$10,000 prize purse on the line. The event will honor the life and legacy of Fran Crippen who tragically passed away during a 2010 FINA World Cup event in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. The inaugural Crippen Cup Open Water Marathon includes a very competitive field with elite swimmers from Brazil, Sweden, Canada, Germany and the U.S.

The Crippen family will be on hand for the event and the Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation will host an open water camp in conjunction with the Festival. An all-star team of Alex Meyer, Teresa Crippen, Rick Walker, Denny Ryther, and Emily Brunemann are serving as coaches and hosts for the clinic.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
