Seven Habits Of Successful Open Water Swimmers

Stephen Covey describes the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People in his self-help book as follows:

Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

His habits, outlined in his popular and influential book that sold more than 15 million copies in 38 languages worldwide, are also ingrained in many successful open water swimmers.

Habit 1: Be Proactive
Successful open water swimmers set their goals, daily, monthly, annually, professionally and personally. They do not wait for others or for less-than-ideal situations to change. They act with a purpose and make decisions while also adapting to the situations at hand.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Successful open water swimmers know where they want to end up. They hold themselves up to certain standards and move forward despite hardships, obstacles, changes and the unexpected that may occur.

Habit 3: Put First Things First
Successful open water swimmers know the value and effectiveness of prioritizing and executing their plans, both on land and in the water, at work, at school, with the family and training.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Successful open water swimmers understand that their swims, their season, and their career is also dependent upon others: family, friends and coaches. They are flexible to work with others and give-and-take in order to maintain long-term valuable and valued relationships.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Successful open water swimmers listen to coaches, parents, friends, lifeguards, fisherman, boaters, captains and other swimmers. They grasp the situation, however dynamic it may become, and maintain an open mind on how best to swim successfully and safely.

Habit 6: Synergize
Successful open water swimmers are not islands; they utilize the strengths and positive teamwork of others so the ultimate outcomes are appreciated and achieved by many others.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Successful open water swimmers are focused and dedicated, effective and efficient. With many things going on in their lives, they often succeed at most endeavors.

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.
