Open Water Observations From Aaron Peirsol

Aaron Peirsol, the 7-time Olympic medalist and one of history's most famous backstrokers, will participate in his first elite open water swimming competition on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro for the King and Queen of the Sea competition this weekend. At the pre-race banquet, he made some very complimentary observations about the open water swimming community. "I am fortunate enough to be here. It has been very special for me.

I have been swimming all my life, but I am the rookie here among my teammates. I have been sitting back and watching things this week; open water is one of the best-kept secrets. The life and culture of this sport are something very special. Open water swimming may be related, but it is very much different than pool swimming, the world where I come from.

This ambiance is a testament to the athletes. I can see the swimmers are very passionate about your sport. Every single one of the athletes want to be here. This is very healthy and it is nice to see to something so innocent.

Thank you very much to the sponsors. I observe open water is very much a lifestyle and a culture. Open water is much more than a sporting event. It is a very good and healthy culture. People will recognize this and the sport will grow, is growing.

As for me, it is a weekend on the beach. We will work hard, race well, but that is the way it should be: fun and work going hand-in-hand
."

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
