Kim Lumsdon, Third Time Will Be A Charm

Canadian Kim Lumsdon has good genes.

And she possesses an even stronger determination. But most remarkably, Lumsdon is getting faster the older she gets - no easy task for a lifelong swimmer.

In 1976, at the age of 19 and coached by her father and International Swimming Hall of Fame and International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honour Swimmer Cliff Lumsdon, she became the 11th person to swim across Lake Ontario with a time of 21 hours 27 minutes from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Ontario Place.

Time passed and Lumsdon attempted the crossing again in 2006. At the age of 49, she became a member of the 24-hour club with her 51 km solo swim south-to-north across the lake in 26 hours 27 minutes.

This summer in July, at the age of 56, she swam 40 km across the lake in a charity swim to fight cancer, but had to be pulled because of bad weather.

"I was in the best shape ever at 56, faster and stronger," she explains. "This crossing would be my fastest swim across if it didn't storm. I started swimming when I was a baby and was a competitive swimmer by the age of 9." She certainly followed in her father's wake. "I saw my father do many marathon swims. The best advice he gave me was to train hard and do lots of distance swims before my own swim which will make you mentally fit for the long haul." So in 2015 she will go for it again...at 58.

In January 2014 after been followed and filmed for two and a half years, a documentary will be released of her swims and exploits.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
