Alice Franco's Odyssey In The Open Water

24-year-old Alice Franco knows she has a long road ahead of her. Her goal? To compete in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

She has been training for years, long hard sessions in the pool along with dryland training. "I used to swim the 200 butterfly, 400 medley, 800 freestyle…all the long events. Then I did a 3 km time trial in the pool and some open water events. I liked it so much, I continued in the sport."

And she has been climbing up the global ranks of elite open water swimmers even since. She earned a bronze medal at the 2011 FINA World Championships and a fourth at the 2013 FINA World Championships. But she would badly like to represent her native Italy in 2016 in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim.

She knows the next few years will be a struggle to get faster and stronger. She knows nothing will come easy and the ultimate of commitment and courage will be necessary. So she has a tattoo on her forearm reminding her of the classic Greek poem The Odyssey.

Like the Greek Odysseus long 10-year road home, she will have to endure battles and surprises in the open water, be strong and clever and even a bit lucky, to ultimately reach her goal.

But she has a gleam in her eye and fire in her belly with all the intention to realize her dreams.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
