So What Do You Do?

At a cocktail party, business convention, corporate function, family get-together, wedding or bar, when you are asked, "So what do you do?", what do you answer?

That can be both an easy question and a challenging question to answer, but it can also be a fun opportunity to explain the world of open water swimming.

It is easy - and expected - if you tell people your particular job title or what your profession is or what your industry work in:

"I am a sales manager." "I am a high school teacher." "I run a company." "I own a restaurant." "I intern at a bank." "I am in advertising."

Do you answer the question by telling people what you are paid to do?

But is how you earn your money the way that you define yourself? Do you answer the question by attempting to impress the person or as a means to find out what the questioner does? Do you answer in an attempt to see what business possibilities may result or simply as a friendly means to continue the conversation?

Or do you answer by saying, "I am an open water swimmer" or "I do something very few people in the world can do" or "I am training to represent my country at the Olympics" or "I wake up early and go to bed even earlier in order to push the boundaries of my own potential" or "I coach individuals to achieve their goals" or "I enable others to realize their dreams"?

At that cocktail party, business convention, corporate function, family get-together, wedding or bar, instead of giving your job title or profession as the answer to the familiar question, "So what do you do?", try answering something related to open water swimming. You may be surprised how fun and the direction that the conversation takes.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
