Big Dreams And Tiny Boats Across The Maui Channel

"My crew and I are ready to go after dreaming of this challenge last year," says photographer Meredith Novack.

"It is my first channel swim and I have learned so much this year. We really are the little engine that could with a big dream and the heart and determination to get it done.

There are 6 military, lifeguards, and firefighters on my crew on the tiniest fishing boat with no bathroom or outlet, but we are going to make this work."

While being filmed for The Surf Channel, she will attempt to swim from Lanai to Maui and back. To date, only Dr. Peter Attia has completed the 20-mile Maui Channel double in 11 hours 45 minutes.

Besides her sponsors like Waterpro, Mokulele Airlines, the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Aloha Salads, the Marsha Nadalin Salon, and The Surf Channel, Novack has received the support of many local channel swimmers from Bill Goding to Leahi Camacho.

"A few weeks ago, I called Leahi and asked her if she would let me borrow her Shark Shield. Leahi, sweetheart that she is, said yes right away. I am so thankful - since I am swimming in shark territory, it had weighed very heavily on my mind..."

The 37-year-old masters swimmer from Oahu hopes to achieve something more than just becoming the second women to complete this swim. "I hope to inspire others with a message of moving forward when facing adversity and never giving up on yourself no matter your age, gender or circumstance. If something challenging happens in your life, it's all right to pause but not to stop. Never stop believing in yourself and keep moving forward."

Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
