Amanda Horton Gets Inspired

She is not one of the elite competitive swimmers, but Amanda Horton is representative of many of the thousands of athletes who participated in the Big Shoulders event in Lake Michigan this weekend.

And Horton was brutally honest about the triangular course within view of the magnificent Chicago skyline. "This has been my most challenging open water event so far. I decided two years ago after reading Lynne Cox's books, "Grayson" and "Swimming to Antarctica" that I wanted to improve my swimming enough to do open water swims, and get to a level where I could swim in the ocean.

I have gotten some coaching and tips from Dee Schreur and Mike Jotautas as well as Victoria Rian and Dick Sidner in Indianapolis, Indiana during the past year and a half. This year's 2.5 km Big Shoulders was my fourth open water swim and did it in 57:54. It will only get better from here."

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
