Living Out Of A Swimsuit And Suitcase, Traveling With Held

After training in Florida, attending the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation ceremonies, and racing among the Olympians in the Cayman Islands; after taking part in the 4-day stage marathon swim in the deserts of Arizona with S.C.A.R. crowd and battling an accomplished field in the International Self-Transcendence Marathon-Schwimmen in Switzerland's Lake Zürich, Barbara Held occasionally returns to her home port of La Jolla Cove in California.

Held continues to accumulate frequent flyer miles like few others in the open water swimming community. After a lifetime of helping others, she finally has a bit of time for herself. And she is making the most of it.

Currently in training off the coast of Bretagne, France, the retired paramedic and firefighter will soon head to Paris (probably after a surreptitious dip in the Seine) and London (after obligatory training sessions in the Serpentine) before heading back stateside to compete in the Statue of Liberty Swim and the 17.5-mile Ederle Swim from New York to New Jersey. After racing a short circumnavigation course around one of the most iconic symbols in America (Statue of Liberty) and replicating the historic swim of Gertrude Ederle, Held then returns back to Great Britain to attend one of the most anticipated social events of the global open water swimming community: the wedding of Nick Adams and Sakura Hingley.

For an inside view of her global travels and adventures, read her Outdoor Magazine interview here.

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
