Why We Love Masters Swimming Workouts
Compared to the competitive expectations and team rules of an age-group swimmers, masters swimming is entirely geared to working adults and retirees.
Flexibility and availability are the essence of the masters (adult) swimming community where one can focus on fitness or competition, pool or open water, camaraderie or coaching...or all of the above. And you can mix it up day by day or as you feel like it.
These are just a few of the many different reasons we love this masters swimming community and respect coaches like Patty Nardozzi in Florida and Abe Rogers in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Built upon the vision of Dr. Ransom Arthur, the legacy of the masters swimming community will continue to build and bring joy and wellness to those who participate.
1. Time is generally limited to 60-90 minutes.
2. Workouts are offered at convenient times (before work, lunchtime hours, after work).
3. Husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends occasionally give each other a kiss before going to their own lanes.
4. You can skip the butterfly sets and the coach won't get mad.
5. If you have a shoulder problem, there is usually an M.D. or physical therapist also working out who can help.
6. Attendance is not mandatory.
7. There is always someone older and slower and less fit than you.
8. There is always someone younger and faster and more fit than you.
9. Everyone is comfortable walking around in their swimsuits.
10. You can throw on hand paddles and pull buoys to keep up with the interval.
11. You can move to another lane if the interval is too tough.
12. You can move to another lane if the interval is too slow.
13. If you slow down, no one minds.
14. Lots of smiles and great ambiance.
15. If you need a lawyer, accountant, maid, or plumber, someone always knows someone.
16. If you want to get out, you can.
17. "I was at work," is a valid excuse for getting to practice late.
18. "I have to go to work," is a valid excuse for getting out early.
19. You can just get out even without an excuse.
20. If you love breaststroke, great. If you do not, great.
21. Food always tastes better than workouts.
22. Someone has always been to a city, meet or open water swim that you are curious about.
23. 10 x 100 @ 1:30 is universally understood no matter what country you are in or what language you speak.
24. Coaches are nearly always cool, personable, and flexible.
25. You can just zone out and be comfortable going back and forth...or you can sprint and push yourself to your limits.

An Almanac for Open Water SwimmingAn almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.
