How Many Marathon Swimmers Are There In The World?

With the sport of open water swimming growing in all its various niches, World Open Water Swimming Association conducted a survey of the channel swimming world and estimated there were a minimum of 710 active channel swimmers in 2012 who made at least 942 attempts and 797 successes across waterways in oceans or seas or around/between islands during this year.

The results of Part 1 of this channel swimming survey are posted here.

In Part 2 of its survey of the size of the open water swimming community, the World Open Water Swimming Association estimates there are at least 6,500 active marathon swimmers around the world. But there may be as many as 8,000 active marathon swimmers in the world.

The World Open Water Swimming Association derived this number by a survey of 147 marathon swimming events of at least 10 km in distance (see list below) and adding the 710 active channel swimmers in the world to this estimated number.  Some marathon swimmers do more than one of these swims and there are undoubtedly additional marathon swimmers who do unreported swims of marathon distance or swims that do not get on the global radar, but 6,500 is a reasonable estimate of the current size of the marathon swimming market. And it is growing at a rapid clip.

If readers have alternative or improved methodologies to determine the actual size of the marathon swimming market, please send information to headcoach@openwatersource.com. The breakdown is based on this list of marathon swimming events around the world (listed by distance) in addition to solo swim attempts of marathon distance across channels, lakes, bays or rivers:

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
