Channel Swimmers' Chat Group, Offering Of The Year Nominee

The most hallowed waterway in the world has its own virtual community online.

The Channel Swimmers' Chat Group is a healthy, active, inspirational corner of the Internet where thoughts, advice, updates and information are made freely available to anyone who asks or takes the time to research. Many of the most experienced swimmers and pilots provided gems of wisdom

Created and overseen by Nick Adams, the Channel Swimmers' Chat Group is among the 20 nominees for the 2012 World Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year.

The new World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year award is meant to identify products and services that (1) best support and assist open water swimmers achieve their goals, (2) are innovative, unique and beneficial to open water swimmers, race directors, coaches or administrators, and (3) have made the most positive impact on the world of open water swimming during the calendar year.

The nominations are meant to recognize some of the best and innovative commercial and free offerings that open water swimmers can enjoy.

Extreme swimmers, disabled swimmers, ice swimmers, marathon swimmers, professional swimmers, administrators, coaches, pilots, and swimmers from all walks of life have used, purchased and benefited from an increasingly number of products and services introduced over the few years.

The nomination of the Channel Swimmers' Chat Group reads,

"The Channel Swimmers’ Chat Group is a growing online forum that provides invaluable education and encouragement to those seeking to attempt the English Channel specifically and marathon swims in general. The Channel Swimmers’ Chat Group is a people-to-people service where questions are asked and expert (and sometimes humorous) insight and advice is immediately provided by experienced English Channel swimmers and marathon swimmers from around the world. It is a selfless effort to bring awareness to the Channel swimming community and support to those who wish to join one of the world's most exclusive clubs. A plethora of information, a wealth of advice, a global support group of passionate enthusiasts provide an online platform with the most comprehensive, practical and encouraging information possible. For their vision, sense of community, and selflessness to help others in the open water world, the Channel Swimmers’ Chat Group is a worthy nominee for the 2012 WOWSA Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year.."

The Channel Swimmers' Chat Group is part of the Channel Swimmers website and is an active online forum that provides invaluable education and encouragement to those seeking to attempt the English Channel specifically and marathon swims in general. It was created and is managed by International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honour Swimmer Nick Adams.

The Channel Swimmers' Chat Group was started in the summer of 2000, initially hosted with Smartgroups but it is now hosted with Google. Its primary aim is to keep swimming friends in touch with each other. Due to the international nature of Channel Swimming there is no Club Room or Social Evening, and email is the communication tool of choice.

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
