Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?
What are the names of the different types of jellyfish? How many are there? How many different types of jellyfish are there? What are the biggest jellyfish? What are the most poisonous jellyfish? How do they sting? How much do stings hurt? How do they eat, mate and move? Why are they gelatinous? How many tentacles do they have? What kind of venom do they produce? Are there any anti-venom salves? What is the best treatment for jellyfish stings? Are jellyfish related to Portuguese man o war or sea nettles? Where do people eat jellyfish for food?
Imagine if a colorfully dramatic box jellyfish exhibit, accompanied by pictures of stings endured by open water swimmers, was created by scientists and school districts around the world? Imagine if this portable exhibit was provided to teachers so that these creatures, their environments and life cycles could be explained in every classroom of school children?
Now that would be a fun and educational part of science class!
What a great way to inspire the next generation of citizens to appreciate these organisms and the pending disaster brewing in our oceans. Once the 5th graders of the world start to learn about these issues and how the world's oceans are turning into a perfect storm for the jellyfish crowd, they will certainly get the attention of their parents to also know about this issue...and how the jellyfish are quietly dominating the marine environment.

The Other Shore
The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.
2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac
An Almanac for Open Water SwimmingAn almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.
This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.
But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.
In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
