Railroading In The Open Water
If you're going to be doing races where waves are probable or another variable of racing, practice your finishes by railroading to the finish line.
Railroading is when you use the power of larger wind-generated waves or ocean swells push you forward as you head towards the next buoy or towards the shore.
As the waves and swells build up behind and beneath you, increase your kick and stroke rate, sprinting in conjunction with the power of the swell. This will enable you to gain an incremental boost from Mother Nature's power and direction. Even if the wells are not exactly going in your same direction/angle, but just slightly off your precise direction, it is still frequently advantage to railroad. As the swells pass you, you can then reduce your kick and return your stroke rate back to its normal cadence. Once you've reached the breaking waves near shore, then finish off your race with some body surfing and dolphining into the beach.
