Olympic 10km Marathon Swim in 2020 Summer Games

News from Japan keeps on coming in recent weeks.

In a beautiful artistic display, more than 30,000 lanterns lit up Tokyo Bay this week in a creative bid for Tokyo to be selected as the site of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Odaiba Marine Park within minutes of the center of Tokyo and a well-designed shopping and entertainment destination is the proposed site of the triathlon and 10 km marathon swim.

If Tokyo is selected for the 2020 Summer Games, the marathon swim and triathlon swim leg will take place along a promenade where tens of thousands of fans can cheer for the favorite triathletes and open water swimmers (see light blue water in photo above). The water will be comfortably warm in the summer (22°C+) with a bit of tidal action and the potential for wind-generated surface chop.

The International Olympic Committee will make its final decision among Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid as host of the 2020 Summer Olympics in September 2013.

The 2012 London Olympics 10 km marathon swim will take place in the Serpentine in Hyde Park while the 2016 Rio Olympics marathon swim will take place off the shores of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
