See You In London! The Latest Olympians In The Open Water

Haley Anderson of the USA (shown breathing on left) and Eva Risztov of Hungary just squeezed past their teammates to head the newest contingent of 2012 Olympians. In a tough-fought battle in a course that was either short or extremely fast Anderson won in 1:44:30.6, at least 15 minutes faster than the usual world-class 10K measured course.

But if the course were 12.5% shorter or not, it was a marathon race that was pressure-packed and came down to all-out sprints.

Details of the race will be forthcoming - including confirmation of which athletes officially Olympians. It was difficult for many fans around the world to log on and view the race. But preliminary results and qualifiers are listed below. Federations still need to accept the invitation, so it may take more time to clarify which of the athletes will compete in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim in London.

In the closest mano-a-mano swim-off of the day, Jessica Roux of South Africa just touched-out 2008 Olympian Natalie du Toit 1:50:52.0 to 1:50:52.1.

For such a race of significant implications, it would have been nice to live stream the event with experienced multi-lingual commentators for the enjoyment and entertainment of the global open water swimming community. While a few countries around the world were able to see the Portuguese television feed, it is relatively inexpensive nowadays to live stream the event. Amateur races around the world do it all the time. It is high time that FINA utilize a relatively small amount of resources to bring the exploits of these athletes and excitement of races like this to a global audience.

The final results:

1. Haley Anderson (USA) 1:44:30.6 - 2012 Olympian

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

Preview the Open Water Swimming Almanac:

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
