USC Trojans Gearing Up For Olympic Qualifier In Portugal

Haley Anderson, in the middle of hard training, threw down a quick 8:33 in the 800m freestyle at this weekend's Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine, California. This was her final tuneup before she heads off to Setúbal Bay, Portugal for the 2012 FINA Olympic 10km Marathon Swimming Qualifier swim on June 9th.

Her blazing speed will serve her well in what will be essentially a swim-off between her and teammate Ashley Twichell for the lone American spot in the Olympic marathon swimming final.

But her speed and potential for Olympic glory are not surprising. With famed Olympic coach Dave Salo and world championship coach Catherine Vogt pushing her daily in practice at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, her 8:33 800m freestyle is only a hint of how fast Anderson will be in Portugal.

Of course, she trains at the Trojan Swim Club with fellow USC Trojan and Olympic 1500m champion Ous Mellouli who will also extend his repotoire to the open water in Portugal with a goal to win two gold medals in the 1500m and 10km for his native Tunisia.

The two NCAA champions are looking blazing fast heading into the all-important qualifier in Setúbal Bay.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
