Open Water Swimming Championships In Gambia

The Gambia Swimming and Aquatic Sports Association is hosting its second national open water swimming competition at the Palma Rima Beach Hotel in Kololi on May 8th.

The goal of the 500-meter championship that is being held under FINA rules is to bring together swimmers who wish to demonstrate their open water swimming skills. "This will help the association to scout out good open water swimmers for the national open water team," with invitations open to the fire and rescue services and the Gambia Navy.

Open water swimming makes sense in the Republic of The Gambia, a country in West Africa. While Gambia is the smallest country in Africa, it has a short coastline on the Atlantic Ocean in the west and is situated around the meandering Gambia River, the nation's namesake, which flows through the country's center and empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Gambia Swimming and Aquatic Sports Association hopes to promote, encourage, organize and develop open water swimming in The Gambia and to boost the confidence and courage in the young Gambians who love the beaches (e.g. Sunday beaches in particular). This will reduce the number of death or fatal accidents registered during Sunday Beach activities, among other safety measures, to help those who think they can swim but end up drowning or losing their lives attempting to save others.

Pa Ndure won the 2011 national competition and is looking to defend his title and represent his country in future international competitions.

Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
