One Of The World's Biggest 5K Open Water Swims
Last year, 759 swimmers competed in the event that traverses along the Mexican resort town from Las Hamacas Beach to CICI Beach where the awards ceremony is held within an aquatic park with a wave pool. For children under the age of 8 years old, a 1.5K swim is offered.
For other swimmers who wish to swim a shorter race, a 2.5K race is also offered. For swimmers from colder climates, the warm hospitality and conditions of the Mexican hosts are something to enjoy.
For the 5K race, the minimum pace required is 2:24 per 100 meters in order to finish under the 2-hour time limit. The race is quite a spectacular event with Mexico's elite swimmers and competitive masters swimmers racing along the warm waters between a wide range of safety watercraft from yachts to Jetskis and along a straight point-to-point line of colored buoys stretching the entire length of Acapulco Bay.
In order to maintain this high level of safety, a limit of 700 swimmers will be placed on the event. For more information in English, contact Mauricio Garduño via email.
Acuática Nelson Vargas offers a travel package + breakfast at the Hotel Fiesta Inn Acapulco from $1,235.00 MXN (US$99) per night.
For reservations, call +52 (229) 201-11-00 ext. 1605 or via fax +52 (229) 130-07-30 and use the event reservation code: EVENTO 5K ANV.
Of the 759 swimmers - an impressive 45% of them women - were safely guided by a flotilla of over 40 boats. "It was a great event," said Bill Ireland, a veteran open water swimmer from California, a sentiment echoed by everyone. "The finish of the swim is at a water park, so everyone can enjoy the rest of their day in beautiful Acapulco," reminded Mauricio.
Masters, newcomers, age-groupers and the Mexican elite pro swimmers all mingle and can test themselves in the warm, flat course.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac
An Almanac for Open Water SwimmingAn almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.
This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.
But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.
In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...
