The English Channel World Record Still Standing At 6:57

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

Brendan Capell, one of the fastest marathon swimmers in the world, will take a shot at Petar Stoychev's world record in the English Channel this summer.

The experienced Australian 25 km world champion has the speed and the ocean swimming pedigree to do a fast time...but the English Channel is unforgiving, unyielding and unrelenting.

That August day in 2007 when Stoychev set the English Channel world record of 6 hours 57 minutes was truly something special.

The weather and tides were in his favor, but most importantly he was flawlessly navigated by Michael Oram and he was pushed by Yuri Kudinov.

Let's see if circumstances are created for a similarly special swim this summer...by Brendan or one of the other 250+ individuals who will attempt the Channel. Even cracking the All-time Top 10 English Channel swims is to be among the crème de la crème:

1. 6:57 by Petar Stoychev (Bulgaria) in August 2007
2. 7:03 by Christof Wandratsch (Germany) in August 2005
3. 7:05 by Yuri Kudinov (Russia) in August 2007
4. 7:16 by Vitek Rostislav (Czech Republic) in August 2009
5. 7:17 by Chad Hundeby (USA) in 1994
6. 7:20 by Christof Wandratsch (Germany) in 2003
7. 7:21 by Petar Stoychev (Bulgaria) in 2006
8. 7:22 by David Meca (Spain) in 2005
9. 7:25 by Yvetta Hlavacova (Czech Republic) in 2005
10. 7:40 by Penny Lee Dean (USA) in 1978

The Other Shore

The Other Shore follows world record holder and legendary swimmer Diana Nyad as she comes out of a thirty-year retirement to re-attempt an elusive dream: swimming 103 miles non-stop from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her past and present collide in her obsession with a feat that nobody has ever accomplished. At the edge of The Devil’s Triangle, tropical storms, sharks, venomous jellyfish, and one of the strongest ocean currents in the world, all prove to be life-threatening realities. Timothy Wheeler’s documentary brings Diana Nyad’s extraordinary adventure to life as Diana sets out to prove that will and determination are all you need to make the unimaginable possible.

2014 Open Water Swimming Almanac

An Almanac for Open Water Swimming

An almanac is essentially a body of knowledge which is so complete that it enables people in different fields to make predictions about the future of their respective industries.

This, for example, was the purpose of the traditional farmers almanacs. It enabled farmers to determine as accurately as possible which crops to plant for the greatest harvests in a given year.

But the farmers almanac was just one example among many.
There are, of course, many different kinds of almanacs.

In fact, there is even one for open water swimming...

The trends are very clear.
The tide is rising for open water swimming.
