Open Water From East To West In Florida

This Saturday in Florida there are two major races on the American open water swimming calendar.

On the west coast, the 13th annual Tampa Bay Marathon Swim will be 24 miles of decent distance swimming. 25 relay swimmers and 7 solo swimmers will take to the unseasonably cool (66°F/18.8°C) waters.

45-year-old David Barra of High Falls, New York, 30-year-old Craig Lenning of Colorado, 27-year-old Darren Miller of Pennsylvania, 59-year-old Terry Laughlin of New York, 49-year-old Jacqueline Eastridge of Pennsylvania, 65-year-old Jim Meier of New York and 43-year-old Flavia Zappa of Florida will be chasing the men's course record of 7:41 set by Chris Derks and the women's record of 7:51 set by Penny Palfrey.

Fans can virtually follow the swimmers in the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim here via the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim Twitter feed.

On the east coast of Florida, the annual Nike Swim Miami's will feature an international field of top swimmers in the Miami Mile, 5K and 10K races, including USA National Open Water Swim Team members Sean Ryan of Tennessee, Emily Hanson and Emily Brunemann of the University of Michigan, Eva Fabian of New Hampshire and Alex Meyer of Harvard, who are all preparing for the 2010 upcoming USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships in Long Beach, California in June.
