Open Water Swimmers Navigate Around A Total Wreck

Pre-race favorite Trent Grimsey, left all but one opponent in his wake - young Jackson Vanderzant - at the opening event of the inaugural three-part Queensland Ocean Swim Series this weekend.

Photo on left shows Trent and Jackson battling it out shoulder-to-shoulder.

Trent led the Wrecked Tangalooma Ocean Swim from start to finish in 26 minutes and 6 seconds, but had to fight off Jackson Vanderzant who chased him up the beach in a sprint finish to finish just one second behind.

"An ocean swim series [like this] is long overdue for Queensland. I couldn’t think of better location to kick it off," he and the field had to navigate around a famous wreck (see photo on left). He will have to gear up again for the second race, The Cooly Classic at Coolangatta on April 11th, that will draw a strong local contingent from the Gold Coast.

Brisbane's Robin Saultry (shown on left with Trent) won the women's race in 32:27 with Kimberlee Liedke second in 32:52 and Anneke Ray third in 34:32.

We appreciated the names of the teams that also participated in the race, including the Tagg Team (41:32), The Combies (48:00), Team Anderson (48:08), Team Booth (49:53), Brissie Babes (51:51), Rob and Lynn (53:32), Two Stooges (54:40), Boydies (55:09), Team Poon (55:27), Hot Like A Fox (55:30)
